Not Sure What to Ask? — Starter Prompts You Can Copy

Here are some ready-to-use prompts. Copy and paste any of them:

Writing assistance

I need to write a professional email to a client apologizing for a shipping delay.
Please keep it under 150 words and maintain a polite, professional tone.

Explaining concepts

What is "generative AI"?
Explain it in simple terms as if you're talking to someone who isn't tech-savvy.

Brainstorming

Give me 5 creative ideas for a team-building activity.
Budget is about $50 per person, and we have 15 people.

Summarizing

Summarize the key differences between project management methodologies:
Agile, Waterfall, and Scrum. Present them in a comparison table.

Translation

Translate the following into French, keeping a formal business tone:

"We are pleased to inform you that your application has been approved."

Tip: The hardest part is sending the first message. Pick any prompt above and just try it. After one exchange, you'll immediately get a feel for how Claude works.

Reading Claude's Responses

After you send a message, Claude responds within seconds. Responses come in various formats depending on your question.

Understanding Response Formatting

Claude uses several formatting styles. Knowing them helps you scan answers quickly:

FormatMeaning
Bold textKey points or important terms
Bullet lists (- or •)Multiple items organized in a list
Numbered lists (1. 2. 3.)Sequential steps or ranked items
Code blocksCode, commands, or text to type exactly
Headings (larger text)Section breaks in longer responses

Response Too Long or Too Short?

If Claude's answer is too detailed or too brief, just say so:

  • "Make it shorter — 3 bullet points max"
  • "Give me more detail on the second point"
  • "Explain this like I'm a complete beginner"
  • "Summarize this in one paragraph"

Just continue the conversation. More on this in the next section.

Continuing the Conversation

You don't have to stop after one message. Keep chatting to refine, expand, or redirect Claude's responses.

Follow-Up Examples

Want more detail?

Can you elaborate on that?
Specifically, I'm interested in the part about [topic].

Want it shorter?

Condense this into 3 sentences.

Want a different approach?

Rewrite this in a more casual tone.

Adding requirements?

Add a "Budget Estimate" section to the proposal you just created.

Correcting errors?

Actually, the correct figure is $45,000, not $54,000.
Can you update the document?

Important: Don't expect a perfect answer on the first try. The right way to use Claude is to iterate — treat the first response as a draft and keep refining with follow-up instructions. This is how you get great results.

Chat History Stays in the Sidebar

All your conversations are saved in the left sidebar. You can revisit them anytime or continue from where you left off.

When you want to discuss a new topic, click "New chat" (top left) to start fresh. Each conversation has its own context.

Sending Files and Images

Beyond text, you can send PDFs, Word documents, images, and more. Ask Claude to "summarize this report" or "describe what's in this image."

How to Attach Files

Click the "+" button (or paperclip icon) at the bottom left of the input field to select a file, or simply drag and drop a file into the input area.

Supported File Types

TypeFormats
DocumentsPDF, Word (.docx), Text (.txt), CSV, HTML, etc.
ImagesJPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP
SpreadsheetsExcel (.xlsx) — requires code execution feature

You can attach up to 20 files per conversation, with a 30MB limit per file.

Usage Examples

Summarize a PDF

Summarize the attached meeting minutes.
List only the decisions made and action items, as bullet points.

Describe an image

What's shown in this image? Describe it in detail.

Analyze data

Look at this sales data (CSV) and tell me which product categories
grew the most compared to last month.

Troubleshooting: If a file won't upload, check that it's under 30MB. Scanned PDFs (saved as images) may not have selectable text — use PDFs with actual text content for best results.

Tips for Better Prompts

A few small adjustments to how you write prompts can dramatically improve Claude's responses. Here are three fundamentals:

1. Be Specific

Vague instruction

Write an email

Specific instruction

Write a professional email to a client (John Smith, VP of Sales at Acme Corp)
requesting to reschedule Thursday's meeting to Friday due to a conflict.
Keep it under 150 words and use a polite, professional tone.

2. Provide Context

Tell Claude your role and situation for more relevant responses.

I'm an HR manager at a 50-person startup.
We're implementing a remote work policy for the first time.
Help me draft the key sections of a remote work policy document.

3. Specify the Output Format

Tell Claude exactly how you want the response formatted.

Compare these three project management tools in a table.
Columns: Tool Name, Best For, Pricing, Key Limitation.
Prompt ElementWeak ExampleStrong Example
Specificity"Make a document""Create a table of contents for a new employee onboarding guide"
Context"Write an email""As a sales rep, write a follow-up email after a first meeting"
Format"Summarize this""Summarize in 5 bullet points, each under 20 words"

Tip: You don't need to craft the perfect prompt before hitting send. Try something, see what comes back, and refine from there. That's the fastest way to learn.

Common Questions

What if Claude's answer is wrong?

Claude is very capable, but it can state incorrect information with confidence — a phenomenon called "hallucination."

  • Always verify important facts (numbers, dates, legal info, medical info) against official sources
  • Ask "Can you cite your sources?" to get references — but verify those references too
  • For critical decisions, consult a human expert

Important: Never treat Claude's output as guaranteed truth, especially for business decisions, legal matters, or medical advice. Claude is a powerful tool for drafting and research — but final verification is always your responsibility.

Is it safe to input personal or confidential information?

Claude conversations are stored by default. Keep these guidelines in mind:

  • Don't input passwords, credit card numbers, or government ID numbers
  • Check your company's policy before inputting confidential business information
  • Review privacy settings — you can opt out of data being used for AI training in Settings → Privacy

For enterprise use, Team and Enterprise plans offer additional data protections.

Are conversations saved?

Yes, conversations are saved to your account. You can find them in the sidebar. To delete a conversation, hover over it in the sidebar and click the "..." menu → "Delete."

Why do I get different answers to the same question?

Claude's responses have some randomness built in. This isn't a bug — it's by design, producing more natural and varied responses. If you want multiple options, ask: "Give me 3 different approaches."
