Free Plan — What You Get and What You Don't
Start with the Free plan to try Claude. It covers all the basics.
Free plan gives you Claude Sonnet (standard model) and Claude Haiku (lightweight, fast). Sonnet handles everyday questions and writing tasks well. For the most powerful Claude Opus model, you'll need Pro or higher.
What You Can Do
- Chat — Web, iOS, Android, and desktop apps
- Write and edit — Email drafts, summaries, translations
- Analyze images — Upload photos and screenshots for analysis
- Generate code — Simple programming tasks and explanations
- Web search — Claude searches the internet for current information
- Connectors — Connect 150+ external services (Microsoft 365, Slack, GitHub, etc.)
Limitations
- Message limits — ~15-40 messages per 5-hour window (varies with conversation length and traffic)
- Peak hour throttling — Responses may slow down during busy periods
- No Claude Code — The terminal AI coding tool requires a paid plan
- Projects capped at 5 — Advanced RAG features are paid-only
- Limited top-tier model access — Opus is unavailable or very limited
- Data may be used for training — Your conversations may be used to improve AI models
Tip: "I suddenly can't send messages" is the most common Free plan issue. You've hit your usage limit. Wait about 5 hours for it to reset — or upgrade to Pro if this happens frequently.
Pro Plan — Most Popular for Individual Users
$20/month (or $17/month with annual billing at $200/year) — Pro is the most popular plan for people who use Claude regularly.
What Changes with Pro
- Much higher usage limits — About 5x the Free plan's message allowance
- Claude Opus access — The most powerful model for complex analysis and high-quality writing
- Claude Code — AI coding in your terminal
- Full Projects — Save instructions and files for efficient workflows
- Extended Thinking — Claude can think deeper on complex problems before responding
- Google Workspace integration — Connect Gmail, Calendar, and Docs
- Priority access — Stable service even during peak hours
Who Should Choose Pro
- You use Claude every day for work or learning
- You want to use Claude Code for programming
- You need top-quality output (Opus model)
- You're frustrated with Free plan limits
Max Plan — For Heavy Users & Developers
If you're hitting Pro's limits, Max gives you more room. It comes in two tiers:
| Max 5x | Max 20x | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $100 | $200 |
| Usage (vs Pro) | 5x | 20x |
| Best for | Frequently hitting Pro limits | All-day, every-day Claude users |
Differences from Pro
Everything in Pro, plus:
- Dramatically higher usage — 5x or 20x Pro's capacity
- Early access to new features — Try new models and capabilities first
- Top priority — Fastest processing even at peak times
- Overage purchasing — Buy additional capacity at API rates if you hit the limit
Claude Code Usage Notes
Claude Code shares its usage quota with Claude Web. Heavy web usage + Claude Code can drain your limit fast.
Claude Code consumes significantly more tokens per session than regular chat. If coding is your primary use case, a higher-tier plan makes sense.
- Pro — Fine for light coding. A few Claude Code sessions per day
- Max 5x — For developers using Claude Code 4+ hours daily. Handles large refactoring tasks
- Max 20x — For all-day development. Large codebase analysis and bulk file editing without limits
Tip: Many Pro users are surprised how quickly Claude Code burns through their quota. If development is your main use, consider starting with Max 5x.

Team is designed for groups who want shared workspaces and admin controls.
Pricing (as of March 2026)

FAQ
Can I change plans later?
Yes, anytime. Upgrades take effect immediately. Downgrades apply at the next billing cycle.
What's the difference between monthly and annual billing?
Annual billing saves money. For example, Pro is $20/month on monthly billing but $17/month equivalent on annual ($200 upfront). However, annual payments are non-refundable.
Does my data carry over when upgrading from Free?
Yes. All conversation history is preserved.
Is Claude Code billed separately?
No. Claude Code usage is included in your Pro/Max plan quota. No extra charge — but it shares the same usage pool as web chat.
Can Team admins set per-user limits?
Yes. The Team admin console lets you set spending caps per individual or for the entire team.
What payment methods are accepted?
Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc.) for most plans. Enterprise supports invoice billing.
Are there student discounts?
No individual student discount, but an Education Plan exists for universities (campus-wide access). See the Anthropic education page for details. Individual students can start with the Free plan.
