These are natural questions. This page gives you the knowledge to use Claude safely and responsibly — understanding both its strengths and its limitations.
Claude is an excellent AI assistant, but it's not infallible. Knowing its boundaries is the first step to getting the most out of it.
AI Is Not Infallible
Claude can do remarkably many things, but it has clear limitations. Let's establish the boundaries.
What Claude Is Good At

What Claude Can't Do Well
- Real-time information — Claude's training data has a cutoff date. It doesn't know today's stock prices or breaking news
- Web search accuracy — Claude has web search, but results aren't always accurate or current. Always verify important information yourself
- Creating images, video, or audio — Claude can read and analyze images but cannot generate new visual or audio content
- True emotional understanding — Claude can express empathy in words, but doesn't experience emotions
Tip: Don't blindly trust information from Claude's web search feature. Search results may not be accurate, current, or complete. For important information, always verify against official sources yourself.
Hallucinations — Beware of Confident Falsehoods
One of AI's most important risks is hallucination.
Hallucination is when AI states incorrect information with full confidence, as if it were completely accurate.
Real Examples of What Can Happen
- Citing books, papers, or articles that don't exist
- Describing fictional people's backgrounds in convincing detail
- Getting math calculations wrong while presenting the answer confidently
- Stating outdated or incorrect laws, regulations, or policies
Claude is designed to say "I don't know" when uncertain. However, completely eliminating hallucinations is still technically challenging — this is a risk with any AI system.
How to Protect Yourself
- Always verify critical facts — Numbers, names, laws, medical information, dates — confirm against official sources
- Ask for sources — "Where did you get this information?" makes verification easier. But check that the cited sources actually exist too
- Ask for confidence level — "How confident are you about this?" can surface uncertainty
- Consult experts for specialized topics — Legal, medical, and financial decisions need professional review
Important: The biggest danger is assuming "Claude said it, so it must be right." Claude can be wrong with complete confidence. A convincing-sounding paragraph doesn't mean it's factually accurate.

How Is Conversation Data Handled?
Anthropic's data handling varies by plan:

What You Should Never Input
Personal identifiers:

- Home addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth (yours or others')
Confidential business information:

- Information covered by NDAs

Tip: When pasting content like emails or documents for Claude to process, scan for personal information first. It's easy to accidentally include sensitive data in a copy-paste.

The legal landscape around AI-generated content is evolving. In many jurisdictions, AI-generated text may not qualify for copyright protection, but interpretations vary and laws are changing.
The key point: content created by AI may not be treated the same as content you wrote yourself. For commercial use, competitions, or publishing, check the applicable terms and regulations.
When Inputting Others' Work
- Avoid pasting entire copyrighted works — Using excerpts for summarization or analysis is generally acceptable, but wholesale reproduction may raise copyright concerns
- Check company policies — Your organization may have restrictions on submitting company materials to external AI services
- Commercial use of outputs — Verify terms when using AI-generated content for advertising, products, or publications
Tip: "Can I submit AI-generated text as my own work?" It depends on the context. Internal business documents are generally fine. Academic papers, competitions, or situations involving copyright require checking the specific rules and policies.
Bias and Fairness
AI generates responses based on its training data. This means biases present in the training data can appear in responses.
Where Bias Can Show Up
- Cultural differences — Responses may reflect the norms of one culture over another
- Historical perspectives — Training data includes older content that may reflect outdated views
- Contentious topics — On political, religious, or ethical debates, responses may lean toward particular positions
How to Account for Bias

What NOT to Delegate to AI
Claude can assist with many things, but decisions that carry real consequences must be made by humans.

Legal decisions: Claude can explain legal concepts, but "Is this legally okay?" requires a qualified attorney. Contracts and legally binding documents need professional review.
Medical advice: Claude can provide general health information, but diagnosis, treatment decisions, and medication choices require a doctor. Never delay medical care because "Claude said it's fine."
Financial and investment decisions: Claude can discuss investment concepts, but specific investment decisions should involve a qualified financial advisor. Money management carries personal liability.
Consequential HR decisions: Hiring, termination, and performance evaluations can reference AI input, but final decisions must be made by responsible humans. Be especially careful with personal data.
Important: Some people make significant decisions based solely on "Claude recommended it." AI is a tool for generating options and perspectives — the final responsibility always rests with you. When in doubt, consult a human expert, not Claude.
Claude's Safety Design
While we've covered risks and limitations, Claude is one of the most safety-focused AI systems available.
Anthropic trains Claude using Constitutional AI — a method that defines explicit values and behavioral principles (a "constitution") to guide the AI away from harmful responses. Claude's constitution was published in January 2026 and is publicly available.

- Honesty — Acknowledging uncertainty instead of making things up
- Avoiding harmful content — Refusing to provide dangerous, discriminatory, or illegal information
- Supporting human oversight — Not trying to override human judgment
